NORDIC ROCKS

Barron & Rusk Counties

The 'Nordic Rocks' for Schools program was developed to introduce a new generation of children in grades K through 6th to the excitement found in the sport of cross country skiing. The program provides elementary and middle school students an opportunity to experience cross-country skiing during the school day, with their teachers and classmates. The program allows them to learn about the health, wellness, and the benefits associated with exercise and outdoor fun.

The 'Nordic Rocks' program is successful due to a three-way partnership between selected schools, Central Cross Country Skiing (CXC), and community organizations. This unique partnership allows teachers to teach skiing during physical education classes, recess, and after-school programs.

Students are able to ski with their teachers and friends on any outdoor surface covered with a minimum of two inches of snow. CXC will assist each 'Nordic Rocks' school with a skiing curriculum and resources, teaching support, and cross country skiing equipment.
In 2015 the first program in Barron County was started at the Tainter Elementary School in Rice Lake, this was started with CXC, Out There Nordic & the Rice Lake Schools. In 2016 Out There Nordic passed their portion on too the newly formed 4591 Sports Development. In 2017 CXC, 4591 SD & the American Birkiebeiner Ski Foundation partnered to bring the Nordic Rocks program into three more Barron County Schools- Haugen Elementary (Rice Lake), Cameron Elementary & Prairie Farm Elementary. As of the 18/19 Season we have now implemented the Nordic Rocks Program in all of the Elementary Schools in Barron County & the Ladysmith School District in Rusk County. With this we are now bringing over 3200 Elementary age youth to Nordic Skiing each winter in our area.
